Case Study — Switcher Now at a Relay Race

We teamed up with our UK partner to stream a public relay live — start to finish, no camera crew, no production truck. Just phones, clamped to whatever was already standing at the course: a fence post, a sign pole, a barrier rail.

Each phone was its own angle, running independently. One caught the baton exchange. Another held on the anchor leg. A third watched the finish line, where two runners crossed the tape together in a finish tight enough that having a second angle actually mattered, not just as a nice-to-have.

That's the part worth sitting with: viewers weren't handed one fixed shot. They picked. Baton exchange or anchor leg, live, in real time — the same choice a producer would normally make for them, made instead by whoever was actually watching.

The setup end of this was almost aggressively simple. A phone goes into a small clamp mount, the clamp locks onto whatever's nearby and stable, and that's the entire rig. No cabling between cameras, no sync, no one standing behind a switcher board calling shots. Once it was up, nobody had to touch it again until the race was over.

Getting people watching was just as plain. The watch link went out as a QR code, by text, by email, on social — whichever was fastest for whoever needed it. No app to install, no account to create on the viewer's end. Point a camera at a QR code, and you're watching.

Nothing about this was a scaled-down version of a broadcast. It was a different thing entirely — the kind of stream where anyone standing at the course could have been the one who started it.
